Standing by the Charcoal fire

April 13, 2015

On Friday in the Octave of Easter the Gospel is JN 21:1-14  where Jesus appears to the disciples while they are fishing.  Our priest made an excellent point about symbolism of the Gospel writer specifically mentioning a charcoal fire that Jesus had waiting for the apostles.  It was the same type of fire that Peter stood next to as he denied Jesus.  And the message to Peter and all the apostles was, I know what you did (do) and I still invite you to join me.

A bigger message that we got from the homily was this.  Here they are just a few days after the resurrection, and the disicples have gone back to their old life.  Leaving the glory of Christ's sacrifice and triumph over death, and going back to the same old, same old.  How much are we like that?  Each Sunday we visit again the sacrifice, and redemption of the resurrection and on Monday morning we are back at the same old, same old.  We are called to not just witness the glory of salvation and keep it to ourselves, but to witness it and be a witness of it to others every day.

Let's take the fire and spread it around, not just stand next to it to keep ourselves warm.

See you on the road.
